When you do backpacking… sometimes you think “It’s very… romantic.” Sri Lanka Cambodia Oman Ireland Thailand India Spain Laos Northern Ireland Taiwan If I can live for one month here How nice would it be? Would you like to try to stay one month through Workaway? Hello everyone. It’s Hyekyong from Lifetime Travelmates,
a backpacking couple Today I would like to give you
one of the best travel tips. When you go backpacking,
You are probably going to spend most of your budget on transportation, accommodation and food. But today I will introduce you how to
save your travel budget on accommodation and food and even how you can get free meals
and free accommodation If you are new to our channel
Please make sure to subscribe to our channel We provide useful travel Information, backpacking vlogs, and many other videos so
please click the subscribe button and also make sure to turn on the notification bell Travel tips In the previous videos,
I told you about about Couchsurfing and Housesitting those are other ways to save your budget on accommodation Couchsurfing is actually quite popular for backpackers nowadays but I don’t think many people know about Housesitting If you are interested in that, we also have a video about Housesitting so please check that out You shouldn’t miss that I will also put the link in the description down below Today I will like to focus on “Workaway” Workaway means literally you work away from home So you work and in return you are provided with accommodation and meals Depends on hosts, it could be all three meals or two meals We were provided at least one meal a day We did 4 Workaway so far One in Vietnam, one in Laos, Vang Vieng
And one in Thakhek, Laos and onc in Otres, Cambodia.
So we had in total four Workaway experiences. It was very good These days It’s kind of a trend in Korea to stay long
like one month instead of traveling just for a few days. But there are many things to be considered like the accommodation, transportation fee, meal cost, and also the visa But If you use Workaway You don’t need to worry about all In fact, visas need to be prepared separately. In relation to that,
I’ll tell you later in the video Then, how do you use Workaway?
It’s similar to Couchsurfing. You can go to the Workaway homepage and check the posts. when you find a good place to work and stay you can just send a message to the host.
Then if the host accepts you, you can go. Let’s take a look at the website In the next video, if you want to know how to search in Workaway homepage and tips for choosing the best job, please check the PART 2 of this video Then now let me tell you about
the ups and downs of Workaway The first advantage is that you can save your money on the accommodation and meals. That’s the best! For example, when we worked in Thakhek, Laos, The host wrote that
two meals would be provided. In fact, we ate all three meals there almost everyday
There was a separate kitchen so we also could cook. Every time the hotel staff was having a meal,
they said “Come and have some ” So most of the time, we ate with them at the resort. Let’s learn Korean numbers with Lei
(Lei was one of the local staffs at the resort) Hyekyong: Your age is… 2 Lei: 2! Hyekyung: 10 ~ Lei: 10! Hyekyong: 5 ~ Lei: 5! Hyekyong: 25! The number of your age! Lei: ??? Everyone: LOL Leei: 1! 2! Jordi: LOL Lei: 3! Lei: LOL Hyekyung & Lei: LOL Lei: 4! Hyekyong: 5 ~ Lei: 5! Hyekyong: 6 Lei: 6! Hyekyong: 7! Lei: ????? ??????? Second is you can stay long in your favorite destination Have you ever experienced that you went to some island and you thought
“Ah ~ I just want to stay here for a few weeks” Or “I want to stay here for a month.”
There are times when I thought like that But it’s not easy because of the cost for staying long But with Workaway, you can stay long in your favorite destination because it helps you to save your travel budget We stayed three weeks in Vang Vieng, Laos and we did almost everything we wanted to do in Vang Vieng Because we had enough time Phi My Lao (Laos Chinese New Year)
The scene of the Vang Vieng Festival! Happy Lao New Year! Congratulations on Laos Chinese New Year! The third is
you can live a consistent life style When you do longterm travel, you get to move to many different places. Everything is very fun and exciting at the beginning. All the packing, unpacking and repacking is not a big deal Then you keep doing that for one year, two years, you might start thinking “Oh, I want to settle somewhere.” Even for only a few weeks, “I really want to stay long in one place instead of moving” There were times that I really thought about that.
So Workaway is a good way to live according to your plan which you might miss while traveling for a long time Why don’t we have a little break … Coffee time Fourth, it’s easy to make friends through Workaway When you work with somebody for a long time, you get to become friends with them We worked in a bakery in Otres, Cambodia There were two more couples besides us. A couple from Poland and a couple from the UK (actually 2) So all three couples made a work schedule and
worked together Since we worked together for a long period of time, we became friends quite easily So even after work, we hung out , have dinner or drank beer Or played board game which we all enjoyed quite a lot
We got along pretty well So sometimes we stayed up until 1 or 2 am playing games I remember having fun hanging out with them
This is one of the best things of Workaway The fifth is you can get other benefits
as a Workawayer For example, when we worked at the hotel in Vang Vieng,
The hotel had a swimming pool. We were able to to use the swimming pool at the hotel for free After we used to finish our day in the pool while watching beautiful sunset everyday There were also Yoga classes at the hotel. So as a Workawayer, we got a discount
for the Yoga classes Oh! the visa!
I’ve saved some information to tell you now. Of course you need to get a visa personally
wherever you go but If you want to do a long term Workaway
You have to extend your visa through either agencies or visa run. But sometimes this can be a bit hassle. In that case, the host can help you
to solve things When we worked in Vang Vieng and Cambodia,
The host helped us to extend the visas So we didn’t have to do it ourselves
I was able to extend my visa very easily. And the sixth is that you can get work experience.
I think this is quite obvious but If you are interested in or wanted to work in a certain field, You can try it through Workaway Since you are not paid psychologically you get less pressure from work. It doesn’t mean that you can work badly like whatever but It’s a good chance to try out
If there is something you wanted to do So now I’m going to talk about the disadvantages It’s a little bit different depending on the host
In some cases there are no guidelines So I need to find works to do
Sometimes hosts don’t tell you Do this! or
Do that! They don’t give any specific guidelines
so you feel like…what? There are times like that So if you meet a host who doesn’t give you these guidelines, It can be a little stressful But if you are a very creative person
who likes to come up with ideas and try something new things,
you are probably be happy with a host like that Because they don’t give instructions
and you can do whatever you want to do So if you know what type of person you are,
that will help you a lot when you apply And the second disadvantage is
The accommodation might be worse than you think If you want to live in a luxury villa for one month, which you might be paying a lot in your own country but you wanna stay in those places relatively paying less then you better don’t do… Workaway Of course, it depends.
You can stay in a really nice house. Maybe you can look it up and find one
But most of the time That’s rare. So those who want to stay in a luxury place for a month, Workaway is not for you But if you want to have a special experience, meet friends, and experience many things while staying long in a place, I think Workaway is a great option for you For more details about our Workaway experiences, How was the hostel? how was the meal?
How was the atmosphere there? How was the work schedule? I posted a separate article regarding that on our homepage If you check all the posts one by one
