College of Engineering Picnic

Well, I think the first thing is show up as I
said, and you know I know it’s scary for students to approach employers, but that’s
why we dress casually at this thing. Try to get over your shyness. We’re
people too. Our businesses are growing –
there’s not enough technical people going into the technical field in this country, and we need more of them. So just try to get over your shyness. Be willing to come up and just say “hey what do you do?” For me definitely the number one thing I did was have my resume reviewed and ready to go out, and I made sure everything was
perfect every period was where it was supposed to be. Dressed professionally
and made conversation at every booth I went to and tried to get to know the
people working there and the company. The students – we look
for individuals that are prepared and have a passion for the discipline that
they choose. Being the in fact that we’re a civil engineering company, we have
major disciplines that UNC Charlotte seems to producer through good students with. We choose to recruit UNC Charlotte students, and I’m a little biased because I’m a former alumni – I graduated in 1993 – but the reason why is because, I mean I can even look at it through the time that I was here, and now, and the Engineering program at UNCC has grown so dramatically – there is such a huge crop of good students right here that we can go to and we know that we’re going to get a
quality student we know you know it’s who we’re gonna get. We know the students that come out here are high quality. We have hired several several UNCC
students, myself one of them, and we have people here that are former UNCC
graduates. So as far as I know every one of them has turned out to be
beneficial to our company and that’s why we’ll continue to come to this event at UNCC. Act interested. So you know walking
around and picking up the free stuff kind of puts a bad taste in employer’s
mouth so come by ask questions about our company. We have the free stuff
absolutely take it if you want to but act more interested and you know what
we do as a company and what you would get out of our internships. Make sure your resume is prepared professionally. Don’t let this be your first draft. I saw a lot
last year like the objective was “get internship,” so take your time, be prepared, relax take a deep breath we’re all normal people don’t freak out. It’s a chill
conversation, take a breath.
