Cubans worry about tourism industry after recent setbacks between US, Cuba

CHANCE AT 40 PERCENT. LOUIE?>>Anchor: CUBANS ON THE ISLAND SLOWLY REALIZING WHAT’S HAPPENING AFTER THE STATE DEPARTMENT ORDERED MOST OF THE EMBASSY STAFFERS TO LEAVE THE COUNTRY BY END OF THE WEEK.>>THIS MOVE ACTUALLY FOLLOWS THE SONIC ATTACK ON THE UNITED STATES EMBASSY IN HAVANA THAT INJURED NEARLY TWO DOZEN AMERICAN DIPLOMATS. LOCAL 10’S HATZEL VELA REPORTS EXCLUSIVELY FROM HAVANA.>>FIRST, HURRICANE IRMA. NOW MAJOR SETBACKS BETWEEN THE U.S. AND CUBA. KOOKANS WHO WORK IN — CUBANS WHO WORK IN THE TOURISM INDUSTRY ARE CONCERNED ABOUT WHAT’S TO COME. WE WANTED TO FOCUS ON THOSE CLASSIC CARS. SO EMBLEMATIC OF CUBA. AND THE DRIVERS OF COURSE. THE PEOPLE WHO REALLY HAVE A PULSE ON WHAT’S HAPPENING WHEN IT COMES TO TOURISM IN THE ISLAND. IN THE TWO MONTHS HE’S BEEN WORKING WITH CLASSIC CARS DAMIAN SAYS IT’S BAD ENOUGH IT’S ALREADY LOW SEASON. AT THIS SPOT NEAR CENTRAL PARK IN HAVANA WE DID NOT SEE MUCH MOVEMENT. NO TOURISM, HE SAYS. ESPECIALLY AFTER HURRICANE IRMA CAME THROUGH. DURING HIGH SEASON DRIVERS ARE ABLE TO DO FIVE, SIX RIDES A DAY. THESE DAYS HE SAYS YOU ARE LUCKY IF YOU GET ONE. TALK TO MANY OF THESE FOLKS OFF CAMERA AND THEY WILL TELL YOU THEY’RE CONCERNED. CUBA IS ALREADY FACING A SLUGGISH ECONOMY. VENEZUELA, ONE OF ITS BIGGEST ALLIES, IS HELPING LESS. MIX IN A HURRICANE. AND NOW A SETBACK IN U.S.-CUBA RELATIONS INCLUDING A TRAVEL WARNING ADVISING AMERICANS NOT TO COME TO CUBA IN LIGHT OF THE ATTACKS ON DIPLOMATS. THESE DAYS HE SAYS AMERICAN TOURISM IS LIMITED. AND MOST CUBANS WILL TELL YOU THEY RELY HEAVILY ON THOSE DOLLARS. AMERICANS PAY BETTER HE SAYS. HE DRIVES HIS BROTHER’S CAR. HE REMINDS US THE MORE TOURISM THE MORE MONEY. NOT JUST FOR DRIVERS BUT FOR THE STATE. IF THE TOURISTS AREN’T COMING BY PLANES, THESE GUYS ARE GLAD THEY’RE STILL COMING BY BOATS. THESE DAYS THEY’RE RELYING HEAVILY ON THE HUNDREDS OF FOLKS GETTING OFF THESE CRUISE SHIPS.
