Data and Policy Summer Scholar Program Student Experiences (featuring Kristen Storms)

(upbeat melody) I wanted to come here to DPSS because I wanted to experience the UChicago academic atmosphere here, and also I wanted an immersive experience with quantitative analysis
and computer programming. (plucky melody) The biggest thing that I’ve really enjoyed and have really appreciated
is that here at UChicago, in the classroom it’s a very
much reciprocal relationship between teacher and the students. The teachers are learning
just as much from you as you’re learning from them, and they always encourage
student interaction, even if the students, we all have various backgrounds in this topic, but we all add something to the table, and all those contexts
can kind of mesh together and really add to the classroom. (plucky melody) This program, despite
my lack of background in quantitative analysis
and R programming, I have felt comfortable in the
classroom to ask my questions because I know that all of my classmates are kind of at different stages, and some know more than others, and we really kind of
collaborate in the classroom and outside of the classroom as well. So, I always have support,
not only from faculty but also my own classmates, and I have a very firm foundation in both quantitative analysis
and R programming language that I can take beyond this program, and it’s very applicable to my work I do at my home university. (plucky melody)
