HistoPad : travel back in time !

HistoPad is a new and immersive experience
for visitors of monuments and museums using augmented reality, 3D reconstruction
and interactive features on digital tablets. Developed by Normandy Productions, HISTOPAD was recently
installed in William the Conqueror’s castle in France. All visitors now get a HISTOPAD to enhance
their experience of this impressive medieval dungeon. This unique ‘augmented visit’ technology uses ‘timegate’ objects transporting visitors back to the 12th century
to visit the rooms as they would have appeared then. Then, pointing the tablet in whatever direction they choose, visitors can look ‘through’ their HISTOPAD
as if it were a window on the past. Exploring the virtual room from all angles,
they can learn more about what they discover, compare the digital reconstruction on screen
to what is in the room today. Visitors can interact with many details of
the digital reconstruction. The authenticity of the virtual artefacts has been fully validated by a scientific committee of experts appointed by the historical site. The background to different artefacts is explained with popup texts on-screen. Visitors can also discover paintings, furniture,
and everyday objects in detail. The treasure hunt game will engage young visitors
and motivate them with rewards. The HISTOPAD brings the museum’s collection back to life,
recounting their own history. Science meets entertainment to create a new
playful knowledge adventure. The results of HistoPad have exceeded all expectations: The audience of William the
Conqueror’s castle has doubled within a year, with an incredible public response, giving the highest rankings
to this new augmented experience. Normandy Productions is now developing
HistoPads on Android and iOS, including additional online social features,
for several major historical sites.
