Hospitality and Tourism Management Program helps WVU students, state soar

I’m April Kaull. I’m here at the College
of Business and Economics today and I’m with teaching associate professor Frank
DeMarco from WVU’s Hospitality and Tourism Management program thanks for
being with us. Tell me about this program I know it’s relatively new.
We were launched in the fall of 2014. With hospitality and tourism being a
major economic driver in the state of West Virginia the College of Business
and Economics decided to start a major and we started with only five students
and now, currently this fall we have a total of 52. How does the program really
give those students real-world experience in Hotel Management and in
that field? The two major areas that we focus on Hotel and Resort, food and
beverage and then we also have a lot of students that are interested in event
planning and for us to make sure that our students are competitive in the
market we implemented two internship experience for the students before they
graduate. So we have great partnerships with some of the local organizations
and some international companies. Why is a program like this not only important
for students in WVU but also for West Virginia? We have a great state and we
are here trying to help increase business for the state and developing
young leaders and keeping our talent is real important to us. A key part of West
Virginia Forward and that new initiative is a focus on tourism. Talk about the
link between this program and West Virginia Forward and focusing on tourism
as an economic driver. In the spring of 2018 we are going to be launching a
hospitality and innovation lab and classroom at the Evansville Crossing.
We’re going to be able to work with academia, industry and do research and
projects and so they’re going to be able to help lead us to that next level in
hospitality and tourism. For more information about this program as it
continues to develop and everything happening at West Virginia University
