How to Protect Your Home While You’re Away on Vacation.

Hi. It’s Bernard Nomberg of the Nomberg Law Firm in Birmingham, Alabama. We wanted to share some safety tips for protecting
your home while you’re away on vacation and we hope that this list will give you
some things to do to prepare yourself for when you are out of town and it’s
not an exhaustive list but it is just a compiled list of things that we think
may be of help first and foremost if you can consider
hiring someone to house it a college student who you know a neighbor a friend
or relative is not doing anything during the time period you’re out of
town may be a good candidate somebody who you trust can stay in your house and
operate the house as if you guys were home that’s something to consider if you
don’t have a home monitoring or safety device or safety security system
consider getting one there’s all kinds of systems out there that you can
monitor on your phone via an app that have real-time responses keep up regular
maintenance on your homes for example if you have a regular scheduled yard
service or gardeners continue consider doing that anytime that they show normal
activity at home I think is a deterrent for people who may want to try to rob
your home let’s say keep a house key with a friend a relative or a neighbor
who you trust in case there’s an emergency of some sort that they can
quickly get over there or have access to the house a person with a key to your
house can check the lights if the pets are home they can bring in the mail they
can water your plants they can just do some of the things that on the inside of
the house also show to the outside world that there is someone living in the home
at the time hold your mail and newspapers if you regularly have those
delivered just notify the carriers to have it held during the time period so
it’s not accumulating outside keep a low profile on social media
don’t advertise that you’re going out of town or put pictures contemporaneous
when you are out of town even if you think that it’s only visible for your
friends that’s not the case just err on the side of caution there I wouldn’t
post anything advertising that you’re out of town lock up all of your
valuables in a safe or take it to a safety to security box deposit box at
your local bank don’t just leave jewellery and money and those types of
things in their regular places within your home unless they’re locked up don’t
leave one of those Haida keys on the premise those rocks or whatever other
hiding devices are too easy to find and you just don’t want to give an
opportunity for somebody to find that accidentally or if they’re actually
looking for consider installing an outdoor sensor light one of those motion
detection lights on your driveway different parts of your yard will help
to be a deterrent and they’re not very expensive anymore disconnect your car
garage excuse me your disconnect your garage door this way someone can’t
accidentally trip it and open it up and disconnecting it shouldn’t take very
long and then lastly and again this is not an exhaustive list it’s just one
we’ve helped to compile is if you have a security system or monitoring system
that you actively use if there’s some signage stickers for the window some way
to advertise the fact that you actually have some type of security or monitoring
system in place will also act as a deterrent
we hope these will be some good tips things to do things to consider for when
you’re away to help protect your home and keep it safe for when you come back
