Borra caves are located about 90 kms north of Visakhapatnam (vizag) of Andhrapradesh, India These caves are in Ananthagiri hill ranges of Eastern Ghats The Ananthagiri hill range is in between 800-1300 meters above Mean Sea Level BORRA means HOLE in Oriya Language…this is the hole which was called as BORRA(Hole) William King, the British Geologist discovered the caves in the year 1807 the perennial water flow over a period of time results in formation of the caves small streams from hillocks going towards Gosthani river(Go means cow, sthani means udder) carved out caves. The Humic acid in the water reacts with Calcium Carbonate in the Limestone and dissolves the minerals by breaking the rock gruadually The water percolating from the roof containing Calcium bi carbonate and other minerals Calcium bi carbonate other minerals contained water form mounds on the ground called STALAGMITES sphere like structures hanging from the roof are called STALACTITES The formation of brain shaped STALAGMITE at the central part of caves can be said as the gift of nature Andhra University Anthropologists excavated here stone tools of middle Paleolithic culture dating back to 30000 to 50000 years indicating human habitations here we can find the face of a old witch on the walls brain shaped STALAGMITES Kottavalasa-Kirandul (KK line)railway line of East coast railway train track is laid over the caves. devils face can be seen here likewise many creatures shapes are also seen here The total length of Borra caves is about 200 meters. but the distance we trek inside is about 350 meters. the main entrance of Borra caves is at altitude of 705 meters MSL but the interior goes down to 625 meters MSL November and December months are ideal to visit the caves. The caves well connected by road and rail. nearest Internationa Airport is Visakhapatnam Airport 76 Kms and Visakhapatnam city is 90 km away by road Breath taking hilly terrain, beautiful landscapes, semi-evergreen moist deciduous forests and wild fauna or the area are a visual feast..
