Idukki is a one of the finest districts of
south Indian state Kerala. The beautiful district is famous for its spice plantation, tea plantation
and rubber cultivation. Surrounded by rugged hills of Western Ghats and dense forest, the
district is the home of some best wildlife sanctuaries of the country. Two most popular
places of Idukki are Idukki Arch Dam- the largest in India and Anamudi Peak- the highest
peak of south India. Here is a 6 days tour plan of this nature
rich district of Kerala. Day-1
On day-1 of your tour reach Idukki from any part of the country. Idukki can be reached
both by train or air. Nearest airport of Idukki is Kochi international airport which is almost
97 km away from it. It will take almost 3 hours to reach Idukki from Kochi airport by
road. The cab fare for this trip will be around Rs 3000.
The nearest railway station of Idukki is Theni which is also 97 km away from it.
Upon reaching Idukki check in to your hotel. Day-2
On day-2 morning, go for sightseeing tour around Idukki.
First go to visit Idukki Dam. Idukki arch dam was built by Kerala State
electricity board to produce hydro-electric power for the surrounding locality. Located
at a height of 550 feet above the sea level it is an engineering marvel. Due to its height
it is one of the highest arch dams of Asia. It is also a double curvature dam of massive
size and for that it is visible from quite a distance. Surrounded by lush green forests
and granite hills the view of this dam is breadth taking.
From there go to visit Kalvari mount. Kalvari mount is a beautiful hill 5 km outskirt
of Idukki. The hill top is famous for panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and Idukki
Dam. You may enjoy a gorgeous view of sunrise or sunset from here.
From there go to Ramakkalmedu. It is a beautiful hill station located in
Idukki district. According to the legend, Lord Rama visited this place while searching
for his wife Sita who was kidnapped by Ravana. Enjoy the beautiful greeneries of this place.
The main tourist attraction of this place is a beautiful statue of Kuruvan and Kuruthi
– the two historical characters of the local community. Day-3
On day-3 morning, after breakfast start your journey towards Vagamon.
Located 1100 meters above the sea level vagamon is a comparatively lesser known hill station
of Kerala. If you are a nature lover then the green slopes and pine forest of this place
can be an ideal tourist attraction for you. From there go to visit Vagamon Pine Forest.
Vagamon Pine Forest is place filled with magnificent Pine trees on steep slopes and that makes
it a unique location of that region. This is a less-crowded place and so you will find
less pollution here. This place is ideal for nature walk and photography. Next go to visit Ayyapancoil Hanging Bridge.
It is one of the longest bridges in Kerala and due to its beautiful surrounding area,
It can be your ideal getaway while you are in Idukki.
Day-4 On day 4 morning 1st go to visit Eravikulam
National Park. Eravikulam National Park is a UNESCO world
heritage site and has a rich collection of flora and fauna. You can see the endangered
mountain goat Nilgiri Thar here. From there go to visit Anamudi peak.
It is the tallest peak of South India situated at a height of 2695 meter above the sea level.
The place has largest surviving population of Indian elephant.
From Anamudi peak go to Mattupetty Dam. Mattupetty is the most popular tourist spot
near Munnar. The place offers an excellent view of the lake and tea plantations of the
surrounding area. From there go to Pothamedu View Point. Enjoy
spectacular views of the surrounding tea and spice plantation from this point.
From there go to visit Valara Waterfalls. Situated between Adimali and Neriamangalam,
Valara Waterfalls is one of the most enthralling waterfalls and one of the most popular tourist
spots of the region. Day-5
On day-5 morning, go for boat safari at Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary. Total safari charge including
camera is Rs 285. This wildlife sanctuary was declared as a
tiger reserve in the year 1978. The artificial lake formed by the Mullaperiyar Dam across
the Periyar River is an added attraction here. The prime attraction of Periyar are
the groups of wild elephants, deer and bison that come down to drink in the lake. 
Other than boat safari, jeep safari is also available at Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary.
In the evening return back to Kochi airport for departure.
