the Progressive Judaism movement, and is a member of GEN –
the Global Ecological Villages Network. The Kibbutz recieved the Outstanding Ecovillage Award of the network for it’s social and educational contribution. Lotan appears in the Lonely Planet guide as
a preffered destination while visiting Israel. The Kibbutz was established in 1983 by
the graduates of the Progressive – Reform Movement of Judaism from Israel and from abroad. Today, we are a community of 200 people,
who live together collectively. Kibbutz Lotan has being engaged in environmental research,
development, education and outreach for more than 10 years. We are one of the leaders in the country for recycling and reusing activities. We invested in a Constructed Wetland system for water recycling The purified water serves to water the trees in
the ecological park and the developing nature & bird reserve. We feel a collective responsibility
to develop sustainably develop using the desert resources, and to protecting the flora and fauna around us. Eco-Tourism Kibbutz Lotan
combines three centers. The Center for Creative Ecology is an
educational institution that offers tours, workshops
and courses about ecological building, organic gardening and alternative energy
for individuals and groups of all ages. The Green Apprenticeship program is a long-term course
that teaches college age and post graduate students tools of sustainable living and practical ecology,
ecological design, permaculture planning, ecological building techniques, organic
agriculture, green ecology and alternative energy. The Green Apprenticeship gave me many useful skills
and the self-confidence to use them in my work and in my life – everything is possible. I learned that I don’t have to go far to create
for myself an ecological sound place to live. I can build it from the things I have around me. The Watsu Center for water treatment
also belongs to the eco-tourism branch. The center is acknowledged as one of the best
in the country for teaching the Watsu method. The center offers watsu training courses
, relaxing treatments and unique spa nights. Watsu for me is a gift that I recieved and I pass it
on to our guests and to students who participate in our courses. Watsu is a method where the patient floats in the water, weightless. People
describe their experience as flying, dancing and comforting like revisiting a womb or their childhood. The Nature and Birding Watching Center, guides
you to the magical desert with certified tour guides that offer a new perspective
on the mystical beauty of the Southern desert of Israel. We create personalized tour itineraries for you.
Kibbutz Lotan is an important rest stop for many migratory birds. More than 500 million birds
pass through every year on their way back to Asia and Europe. Kibbutz Lotan built a nature reserve for these birds, a place where they can safely rest, eat, drink, and includes comfortable facilities for birders, nature lovers
and researchers from all over the world to view them. Kibbutz Lotan members feel obligated to work together for the shared
vision of protecting the quality of our environment. Visiting Kibbutz Lotan allows you to be a part
of the community in which you can learn so much from about how to live in a positive way and how
to lovingly care for each other. In Lotan we believe that a small community can make a difference. We can benficially influence our natural and social surroundings.
Every one of us can be part of this change and everyone who comes here can take a small
tool with them back home with and start the change.
