Stevens Point Travel Training

Stevens Point Travel Training

Travel training is a free, independent
living skills training program that assists people to become confident and
independent using public transportation. The program is specifically designed to
assist people with disabilities or the elderly to become competent transit
users, but in Stevens Point we’ve opened it up to any community member who would
like to feel more comfortable with some instruction and assistance. “It was easier
to learn the bus routes with the travel trainer.” “I was able to go wherever I
wanted to go once I learned how to get on the bus and get off.” The skills
trainer will meet with you and discuss what you would like to know. This can
range from a one-time map or timetable lesson a ride-along for familiarity, to
comprehensive training or there’s a series of one-on-one meetings practicing
developing skills. “I forgot how to get around town so I called a travel trainer.
She showed me the different buses to catch to get where I got to go to the
different stores or restaurants. “Trainers emphasize route knowledge, sometimes
including learning the way to and from a person’s nearest bus stop. “When I take
the City Bus, I can get around easier on my own.” “I am learning how to get to my
workplace with the travel training and now I can do it by myself.”
Bus etiquette and safety, map reading, ways to be at the right place for pickups,
signals to get off the bus. “I love riding the City Bus.” If you or someone you know
could benefit from the service, please have them call Central Transportation at
715-341-4490 and schedule a meeting with
our Travel Trainer today.
