Student Stories: Polly, BBA Management, Hospitality and Tourism Management

My name is Polly Elsey. I’m studying
Hospitality and Tourism management. It’s a really cool combination of the study
of working with people, with a focus on customer service, client management, as
well as tourism and travel. Instead of just having lectures in class, and going
through the textbook, and having PowerPoints, Lubin professors really
stress the importance of going out into New York City, and for us to get a really
good handle on what it’s like to be a young professional within the
hospitality and tourism industry. So, for example, we went to the New York Hilton
with Professor Andrew Coggins, and got to go behind-the-scenes, see what it’s like
down in the basement, in the kitchen, speak to different employees in all
different kinds of jobs within the hotel, and really get a good sense for what
it’s like to be a manager, and the importance of knowing every role that’s
played. Lubin professors really like to give us group projects. Learning when you
need to take a lead as a heads on leader, and when you need to take a step back
and lead from the back. Those kinds of experiences really keep you in that
business mindset. You need to bring your A-game at all times. I started working
for the Welcome Center at Pace University my second week of freshman
year and I think that was really where I got a handle on my love for hospitality,
and customer service, and client management. The first question I’m
usually asked is how’s the food. I think that’s an old question for any, any
family that’s visiting a college campus. I’m pretty sure I probably asked the
question. As a tour guide at Pace you’ll, you are giving prospective students a
taste of Pace. For Lubin School specifically the word I would say is
opportunity, absolutely, hands-down. The support I’ve been given to go out, and
explore, and feel confident that graduating in the spring is exciting, and
it’s something that I’m definitely ready for.
