Every year, the U.S. Embassy in Bulgaria sends thousands of students to the Summer Work and Travel program. To make the application process easier, we wanted to share some important information. This is a video about what to expect during a Summer Work and Travel program interview. When you schedule an appointment for your summer work and travel interview, please be aware that your appointment time is the time when you need to arrive to the embassy, not when your interview begins. There is no need to arrive earlier than your appointment time. You can expect to be at the Embassy for about one hour. It will go faster if you do not bring liquids or large bags, such as backpacks. Hi, how are you? Hi, good, thank you. Good. So, tell me, when were you born? Ah, Veliko Tarnovo. Not where, but when. When is your birthday? Oh, March 4th, 1984. Okay. You do not need to be fluent in English, just know enough to be able to communicate and to answer simple personal questions. The interviewing officer will give you a chance to prove your ability by repeating the questions in different ways. It is important for you to be able to communicate while you are in the U.S. in order to have a positive cultural exchange and to stay safe. I am nervous. I heard they don’t issue visas to first year students. I’m even more nervous now. I’m a final year student and I heard they NEVER issue visas to final year students. People say that first and last year students can’t apply! It’s a MYTH! You can apply even if you are a first or last year student! You just need to be a full time student from an accredited university. When you finally reach the interviewing officer, remember: Take a deep breath. The interviewing officer wants you to succeed, but you must be able to show you speak English well enough to participate in the program. Listen to the questions that are asked. Ask for clarification if you don’t understand. Talk to us. Talking to us will show us your English level is high enough to participate, and will help convince the officer that you are eligible. One or two word answers do not tell us much. Please remember to apply early! We hope this information has been helpful to you. We want all qualified applicants to be able to go the United States and share their culture. We are looking forward to seeing you at the Embassy!
