Top 10 Reasons to Travel to NYC Solo || Visit NYC Alone ?

What’s up Members of the Barrio It’s Jon coming to you from a very cool place in the Financial District But we’re going to get to that I got a really interesting DM the other day on Instagram One of you guys asked me.. Should I visit New York by myself.. And I got to thinking That’s an excellent question And many of you out there want to come to the Big Apple But are just to afraid to take that leap To travel solo Can’t get your husband to go Can’t get your best friend to go Well todays video is a kick in the butt I’m going to give you 10 Reasons You Should Visit New YOrk City By Yourself Guys make sure to check out my other New York City Tip’s videos Linked down below in the description Here we go We’re going to start with this reason Nobody cares This is a city of 8 million people All who have better things to do Than judge for traveling by yourself Look at you for walking on your street by yourself We’re coming to you from the Elevated Acre Which is this amazing park In the financial district I am filming right now like a fool And nobody cares Nobody’s even watching me Because everybody has their own problems and things to worry about There are so many crazy things going on in New York That you walking by yourself Eating by yourself Whatever it may be Nobody cares It’s okay to go out to eat by yourself In New York There are so many restaurants.. sushi bars Where you can sit at the counter Restaurants that have bars where you can sit there Literally one of my favorite sandwiches in New York City Is only served at the bar at Delmonico’s The 100 dollar Grilled Cheese Trust me it’s life changing Also there’s a lot of quick serve healthy eating places you can go to All over the city Where people are constantly eating by themselves Not paying attention to you And if you really don’t want to go out to eat And you’re alone You can always go to one of the many super markets Trader Joes Get a meal to go It’s all fine Alright next up on the list Let me take care of this one for you Jon Ladies and Gentleman it is Tal from the Traveling Clatt I’ve decided to let him do the next 3 reasons you should travel solo To New York Because this guy has traveled by himself All over the world Including New York So Tal take it away? Yeah so I thought we would start with talking about how there are so many other people In this city specifically In the same situation as you If you’re coming here as a solo traveler Whether it’s for hostels or meetups with couchsurfing Or just couchsurfing in general Meeting strangers to just do random fun things together The city is full.. Absolutely packed with opportunity For stuff like that Just because of the sheer amount of people that are doing the same exact thing You think about it Me and Jon were just talking How New York City is the number one travel destination In the United States of America For that.. It just means their are so many people coming in here on a daily basis On a yearly basis That the opportunity for you to hang out with people that are doing the same thing Is like.. So so open Just living here for the last 2-3 months I have met so many strangers Just walking on the street People will just come up and talk to you all the time And so.. If you’re coming with some sort of fear of that Just know that.. When you’re here As long as you make it open for yourself That you’re open to opportunities And you’re going to say yes a lot Just.. be open to that And you’ll have so many opportunities coming your way Of people in the same boat as you And I want a good tip to that Let’s say you go on a free walking tour A great place to meet people also Hostels, anyone there’s fellow travelers You have people who can go an explore the city At the same time as you Tal what do you got next? The next thing I would have to say is Just walking around New York City is free If you’re coming here on a budget Especially alone You won’t have to worry about spending much Because you could literally just walk around. People watch Find cool spots to sit down To listen to music To do whatever you want because there’s so much life in this city For me personally my favorite kind of neighborhood to walk around Is Chinatown Specifically one street Called Doyers Street Which has this really cool looking East Asian architecture It will really feel like you’re transported to a different country When you’re there I could literally do that all day Every day And just walk up and down the street Doing it as many times as I want There’s always something happening I think a huge tip is just.. Walk around the city Explore Get a feeling for it Get the life. Ingest all of that when you’re here Guys quick break from the information Look at this park right here We’re at the elevated acre This place is amazing It’s up the stairs on 55 water street It’s your first time here What do you think? It’s so freaking cool I haven’t ever been up here We’re here in spring time right now And it’s so beautiful The weathers perfect We got nice sun All the trees are growing out right now Everythings becoming green Let’s show them the view from the water Guys this is really, this is my favorite part about the elevated acre A lot of people come here just to eat lunch It gets the financial district crowd But you should come especially If you want would I would say Is almost a free rooftop You ready for this view? Look at this There’s freakin helicopters taking off Does it get more New York City than that? There’s helicopters ! Alright my last major tip for you Because a lot of people are kind of scared when they come to New York City for the first time Especially if you’re coming alone If it’s a safe place to be If it’s a safe place to travel to I can tell you personally As somebody whose been living here for the last 3 months And I’ve been covering every square inch of this city I’ve been to like.. all the major neighborhoods Especially for a tourist All the major tourist destinations There hasn’t been a single time yet Where I felt uncomfortable Or unsafe Every neighborhood, every touristy place Is pretty much 100% safe The crime rate in New York City is so low as it is And people generally here are very To themselves They keep to themselves And they’re not going to be bothering you. They’re not looking to harass you You’re not going to have a lot of that .. Like when you travel to other places around the world Where people are trying to sell you stuff on the street You’ll maybe get this in just the tourist destinations But a lot of times It’s very safe There’s very low risk for confrontation In the city in my opinion Thank you to Tal
Check his channel out The Traveling Clatt If you like my informative style He is just as informative And checking out so many cool neighborhoods As well Back to the list New York City Has so many activities That are perfectly fine to do by yourself That maybe are even better to do by yourself Let’s go through some examples Shows Broadway In fact, if you’re alone you have a higher chance of winning Some of the lotteries for the really tough tickets Let’s say Hamilton for example Also do you really need somebody bothering you when you go to a show? If you’re by yourself nobody is going to interrupt you New York also has tons of movie theaters Independent movie theaters Museums I know when I go to a museum And i’m really into something I might not want other people to talk to I might just want to wander and enjoy it by myself And another really cool thing to do alone Bookstores I recommend the Strand It is one of the biggest independent book stores In the country The place is huge Go there by yourself Get lost in those books, have a good time Shopping New York City has so much shopping And I personally hate shopping I prefer to do it by myself You can just spend days going up and down All of the famous streets Going to Century 21 Forever 21 All the places that have the best discounts for tourists And nobody is going to be harassing you About anything Speaking of shopping I have a new t-shirt on my line Thank you Tal Guys just added this to my store If you want to check this out I’m putting a coupon code real quick right there Man Hat Tan Guys tell me in the comments if you like this shirt If you want to order it It’s right down below in the description I get a small portion of the proceeds If you want to support the channel And you like this t-shirt Feel free to order The next reason if you are traveling solo And you are single You’ve come to the right city There are so many single people in New York On all of the dating apps All of the websites I’ve seen plenty of people going to bars by themselves If you go out by yourself people may chat you up I even have a story A friend of mine Met his girlfriend.. they’re not together anymore But that has nothing to do with this video He met his girlfriend on a dating app When she was traveling to New York by herself People here are very openminded to dating Even if you’re only here for a short period That could be.. Just an extra reason to visit One of the best reasons to travel to New York by yourself Is that.. Nobody knows you here Well that is.. if you don’t have friends or family here already But the truth is Coming on a solo trip to a big city like this Gives you the opportunity to try so many new things That maybe.. You’d be to afraid to try if you came with your best friend Who is afraid of staying out til 4 o’clock in the morning Or is afraid of trying really exotic food Or is afraid of going to a certain museum or place New York gives you so many opportunities To step outside of your comfort zone Believe me I’ve done it So many times here Already Give yourself that opportunity and don’t be afraid to travel here solo Because remember Nobody knows you. The final reason to travel to New York by yourself Is.. you don’t need a reason New York City is incredible There are so many fun things to do here Whether you bring somebody or not You’re going to be missing out on so many amazing opportunities For food, for culture For museums For everything For shopping Everything I mentioned on this list And more Everything i’ve ever covered on this channel If you’re to afraid to come here Because you don’t have somebody Else to take with you You truly are missing out And I hope that these reasons
have given you That extra kick in the behind To consider booking a ticket here And making that New York City trip happen Believe me I have rarely ever met somebody Who came to New York And regretted the experience Whether good or bad It was definitley worth it Alright guys make sure to A. Check out the food trucks down the street here If you do come to the elevated acre Awesome place to eat Bring your lunch here For sure And make sure to check out my other New York City playlists Linked down below for awesome tips videos Guides to neighborhoods And more We’ve covered so much of New York in the last year Guys thank you so much for watching as always Until next time There’s this rumor going around New York That if you wear Here Be Barr Merchandise You can get all the ladies Is that true Jon Well I can’t really comment on such things He’s not denying anything so.. If you’re coming to New York It could happen for you

  2. Traveled solo to NYC to visit my friend living in Staten Island in 2017. Fabulous experience. It's not like any other city in the world. Love NYC from Ukraine. God bless USA!

  3. Live less than two hours from NYC and go by myself all the time. All you said is true. I don’t like eating alone anywhere but in NYC you can get takeout/delivery from even really good restaurants.

  4. As a nee Yorker i believe what he says. But if you do want to avoid all the negativity he mentioned…. avoid Times Square and some tourist traps

  5. I visited NYC by myself in 2018. Best vacation ever. No compromises, everyone is too busy to judge.. easier to get resturant tables… also there are plenty of hostels with social areas to meet people or even use eventbrite or meetup to find people. I went to see a movie at 10am and was the only one in the theatre.

  6. I went to NYC by myself when I turned 40. I was tired of not going anywhere just because I was single. I had the best time I have ever had doing anything. Do IT. After that, I was also brave enough to take my kids on vacation as a single parent. Traveling alone is freeing.

  7. I just got back from my solo NYC trip! I was with a friend most of the time who I had also met while traveling solo to Italy. There is another reason to travel solo… you go out of your comfort zone and you meet people you otherwise wouldn’t have!
I know that I certainly pay more attention to things around me and even enjoy a meal by myself better. I didn’t feel unsafe in NYC because I knew I had to be confident (especially as a woman in her early 20s). I would do it again… I could honestly move to NYC ☺️❤️

  8. Done it twice myself travelling from the UK. As you say, no one cares. Everyone is busy with their own lives. When you have so much to see and do. I think it works better being alone. It's impossible to please everyone and you just don't have the time.

  9. Before finally moving here last year, I came to NYC a few times by myself. Each time was better than the last. I highly recommend it if you are feeling inclined. Thanks for the video, great as usual!

  10. I live in Philadelphia. I have traveled frequently to NYC. One of the advantages of Philly is its proximity to NY. I would say a majority of the times I have gone to NY it has been solo (except for two year period when I had a boyfriend that lived in Manhattan). It is nice to go with someone but I really prefer to go by myself because of the freedom it offers me. Many people have a complex about traveling alone. They think that there is something wrong with them if they travel solo. Not the case at all.

  11. Yes you can. I live in nyc and I go places by myself a lot and I haven’t died.
Again: what he said. no one cares

    (Well unless it’s the Bronx)

  13. Can you make a video on where to go shopping on NYC? I'm going in two weeks and I'd like to check out some stores and outlets

  14. Was in NYC with my gf last month, it was so good, I had no expectations, other than New Yorkers having a reputation for being rude, which couldn't have been further from the truth. Surprised you didn't mention the High Line park and that crazy 15 storey park seeing as you're at the Elevated Acre,. You're right about the cinemas, they're a great experience compared to the uk

  15. My friend and I are going to nyc at the end of May and I think I might not wanna come back home. Lol. This excitement is getting to me!!! I can’t wait!

  16. I come to NYC 2-3 times a year by myself. Absolutely love it. Easier to get around and navigate the crowds. Always on your schedule and no one else’s. It’s a fantastic place to stroll around and be influenced by all the stuff going on around you.

  17. Awesome Video ! Everything is True. I have lost count of how many times I have visited New York City since 2006. Always a New, Subtle, Pleasant, or Wonderful Surprise ! Hopefully not TMI, more than once I have found myself awake and about at dawn, stretching limits is good. With that said, I have never, ever, had a confrontational, dangerous situation, even at that time. I can't wait until Memorial Day weekend. 🙂

  18. NYC is a really safe city. In most other cities in the world, you have to be worried about pickpocketing and such, while here there have been multiple times where I left my wallet or phone and someone ran to give it back (something that would never happen in a place like Buenos Aires or Barcelona). Also, the violent crime rate is super low.

  19. Hey john, thanks for your support in mentioning Trader Joe’s. How about a TJ food haul/insider tour of the store? Also cannot wait to visit the elevated acre!

  20. Hello, Jon, I am Jozef from Slovakia (middle Europe) and I just came from NYC one week trip by myself. It was my lifetime dream and it came true. It was awesome and I would like to thank you so much for all your videos which I saw from november 2018 since I’ve booked flight. …and I think, I can't stop watching your channel on and on. 🙂 Keep up the great work! P.S.: here is my short video of your city:

  21. I've spent a good chunk of my life off and on in NYC – just came back from NYC a few weeks ago and already miss it. I wish I went by myself, because I do enjoy my own company and enjoy exploring things by myself. For those that have never been, it's a BEAUTIFUL city to explore. Is it worth going alone? Well, it depends. As long as you're street-smart – know how to spot tourist traps in Times Square – and ask questions if you're lost, you'll be fine. Make sure to ask a MTA employee/NYPD if you are. They're happy to help.

  22. definately give it a go. I went for 3 days in 2017 and I am planning a trip for 5 days in september 2020. Ilove this city and can't wait to go back

  23. I just visited NYC alone except weekends where a friend accompanied me. Coming from the Philippines I enjoyed. NYC is great. Many experiences are free like Central Park, Times Square, etc. But if you want to cover a lot the best deal I got from the hop on hop off Big Bus. I also got a lot of tips from your channel. And if you can afford it watch Broadway shows.

  24. I've been to NYC 4 times, two of those trips were solo. I actually prefer traveling alone, it's so much easier to get around and go where I want to go, when I want to go. Plus, if I get turned around and go in the wrong direction, it's just me.

  25. I didn’t even know this was a concern some had. I’d imagine crime would’ve been the primary concern, but so long as you keep to yourself in the tougher bits of town, you’ll be fine. I travel solo all the time and the only thing I miss sometimes is just sharing the experience with a friend.

If you want to go somewhere and nobody else really wants to tag along, don’t let that hold you back. Be smart, stay safe, and enjoy yourself!

  26. I go to NYC alone all the time and I'm deaf. All my friends think I'm nuts but traveling alone means doing whatever you want.

  27. I will travel to NYC in September for the first time and SOLO! I am sure it will be amazing and I will enjoy it to the fullest :-D. Thank you for all your great and useful videos. Greetings from Czech Republic 😉

  28. This is so timely. I’ll be visiting NYC solo in a couple of weeks for 5 days. This video was helpful and assuring. Really looking forward to my trip more now. Thanks.

  29. i've travelled solo and most of my solo travel has taken place in nyc. i fuckin love it. as a young (19-21) year old female i was definitely asked in a lot of places why i was eating alone or what i was doing in nyc alone etc. no one gives a fxck if you're alone they might just be curious depending on who you are. you need a certain level self awareness to pull it off but its definitely worth it if you're able. (also its fckn expensive in nyc alone)

  30. I traveled to NYC from Boston by myself too many times. Been to all five boroughs alone and never been mugged. Also been to two solo trips to Chicago. Worst part of both trips…TOE and FOOT BLISTERS ?. Yeah I've done too much walking.

  31. I booked my trip for May to NYC because of your videos! It’s my very first solo trip and I’m looking forward to it ?

  32. I've been planning a solo trip for awhile. Vacation just came around 1st of April. Need to buy tics. Should I go in summer or wait until fall? Thanks for the vid.

  33. I went to New York alone for 3 nights a few years ago. I walked all over Manhattan, Central Park, walked the Brooklyn bridge and walked in Brooklyn also. I had fun and it was interesting but I would prefer to go there with a compatible friend if I had a choice.

  34. Went by myself on my first solo trip. My mama was super worried. I used common sense, and didn't go places late at night that were sketchy. Things happen anywhere- that was my main concern. ROFL, never even thought about eating by myself! Really enjoyed it.

  35. Dude! NYC by yourself is THE BEST! I've been twice alone! And one of the latest spots I visited was right that one, the elevated acre!

  36. I have traveled to NYC 1-2x per year since my first trip in 2011, and at least half of my trips have been solo. The more established you and your friends get in your careers, the harder it is to coordinate schedules, and I'm not going to miss an opportunity to visit my favorite city because no one is available to come with me. My experience has been that New Yorkers are the friendliest people and you're more likely to make new friends if you're travelling alone. I love trying new restaurants by myself and sitting at the bar.
On a personal note, I would love to see a living in the five boroughs vs. commuting from New Jersey comparison video. My company has a New York office, so moving to New York is a possible option I would like to pursue in the future.

  37. I don't get why people don't like to do things alone, I go out to eat, go to the movies, and everything by myself, I usually have my ear buds in but I really don't have friends or anything so solo is almost all i know.

  38. Traveling solo is a good idea because you can solely focus on what you want to do, and not have to do what other people want.

  39. Travelled to NYC 3 times by myself. It's a fantastic place to visit solo. If you wanna see what's down thato street, you can. I'd recommend Hostelling International in the UWS for a place to stay.

  40. I keep going back and forth on my decision to go to new York alone
mainly because of my poor sense of direction lol

  41. I soo remember you now. Met you twice in New York. Even at that same spot with earlon and when alkaline the reggae danchall musician/artist was visiting that same spot. I came along with them that day. I hope to have a Kool time when I move. And if you here from alkaline can you guys have him or earlon contact me. Thanks

  42. I went alone to NYC last February, it was my second time in NYC. First time I was with someone else, this time alone. It was awesome both times. I didnt fell unsafe or whatever. I might go back alone soon again. I did stay in a hotel the last time, been checking out some hostels for the next time. Thats the only thing I'm kind of 'scared' of. Never been in a hostel anywhere, let alone.. alone! But its much cheaper than a hotel thats for sure. What would be the best hostel for a 28 year old European male? I dont mind not staying in Manhattan or anything.

  43. Traveling to NYC alone is A MUST, I went to NYC for the first time ever completely alone, and it was life changing. I haven't been the same person since.

  44. Would you recommend going to New York in the summer (june/july) or wait until september/october? Thanks for the great videos.

  45. I'm traveling there this Saturday and I'm excited and terrified at the same time! These tips are helping a lot 🙂

  46. Thank you so muchhhhhh for this video, I was so hesitant but New York is such a dream of mine that I will go even if I have to travel solo.

  47. Very specific question, but could you give me any advice on where to eat dinner by myself for Thanksgiving?

  48. The majority of my trips to NYC have been solo. It’s honestly the best way to experience the city for the first time. Unless you’re with one other person that is a great traveler and won’t “bug” you or put a damper on anything. Lots of places have specific maps that you can get that will show the “highlights” like Times Square, Rockefeller Center, the Garden, Yankee stadium, etc, and also includes an overlay of the subway system so that you can see exactly what train you need to take and how many blocks you need to walk. If you’re concerned about safety, don’t be, there are cops all over the place and plenty of 24 hour businesses that you can go into if you’re feeling insafe or need help.

  49. The downside of traveling solo is that you don’t have anyone to split the hotel room cost LOL

I’m arriving next week, and 4 nights in a hotel at Times Square has set me back to about USD1k.

  50. And I'm a truck driver. And I been to NYC a few times by myself. I love going solo because you have more freedom and do whatever the hell you wanna do. I been to NYC 4 times and I still wanna go back again! So much to do!

  51. I decided on Manhattan for my first solo trip in October. Plane ticket booked, hotel booked…all non refundable. I'm sitting at my desk today and start having a minor freak out. I'm going to one of the biggest cities in the world….alone…. Small town Louisiana, from the middle of no where girl going ALONE. Then I found this video and your you tube page and my worries are all gone! Thanks for what you do! Much appreciated!

  52. I went to NYC by myself and had a blast. I like to travel solo if it's for just a few days. It's nice to make your own choices and places to visit. If you have never done it, you should. I'm meeting my Mother and sister in October for a long Weekend and the two of them have already decided what were doing {except for BJ at MSG} that is always a great time. I don't mind though I'll just go back by myself in a few months Thanks Jon!

  53. I'd love to do a bookstore crawl in NYC. Never been there solo, although I've gone to Walt Disney World alone. If I waited for someone to go with me, I would never leave home.

  54. I come to NYC alone every time except the last time I came with my sis and we had a blast. Coming back in a month and it looks like I'm coming alone again.

  55. Love ur videos John! I traveled over from ireland in august and had a ball! Ended up going to the us open after getting to chat to someone at the WTC ??? we have kept in touch, who knows ??? would do it again in a heartbeat

  56. I went alone a few weeks ago as a first timer. It was amazing and I got to see all of the stuff I wanted, got to experience so much in just a few days.

  57. So I am a resident here in NYC, one of the things I do here in NYC is that I'm an avid illustrator and I like drawing landscapes I observe and sketch them out. The reason why I'm here in this video is for me to keep busy as a college kid closer to the financial district which my university is in the Tribeca area. I love my city too, but with all the security concerns and problems around I don't want to look around the city the other way around. Even as a artist I'm still trying to get recognition and jobs out there. Not many of the jobs around here does have a good position for me to be in. I also live with an family that I also have two of the visas of being Japanese and American citizen. It troubles me living currently, however I must say that without an word of Makoto Shinkai (the animated director who developed Your Name and Weathering With You) said something about making your boring life into something beautiful.

  58. Haha. I feel like this video was made for me. All my colleagues and friends are suprise I'm taking a trip there, first time and during the New Year's Eve. I'm excited and scared at the same time. First time on really cold and snowy weather. All my life been on tropical weather from Hawaii. Looking forward to seeing New York. Been watching all your videos and taking notes!

  59. I'm going to say, Learn to Day Trade, Travel solo, perfect being on your own making money and not spending money, know how to Bodybuild and you'll understand nutrition and what the body needs to live healthy, strong and focused. Perfect spending money on your nutrition and being Clean, then you have control over your finances and can concentrate on making money with your money having a set budget of expenses and there's many things that you can do outside of the hour or three trading that can also earn some cash, especially in NYC. God Bless & once you do and get there, don't be a used nobody who's (new money) in other words,"Don't be a helper to complete strangers out of pitiful sorrows and make for yourself fake friends who will bleed you dry and laugh while you die. " THE END

  60. i met an amazing friend in brooklyn!!! we had an amazing time, it was almost like we were already friends and had agreed to meet up! he was super kind, showed me so many tourist spots and even joined me in the subway! i was really surprised, we are still friends n.n
