Tour One Of The Most Impressive Homes On The Lower Shore called “Beverly Of Somerset”

OBLIGATION CALL NOW IT’S BEEN DESCRIBED AS ONE OF THE MOST IMPRESSIVE HOMES ON MARYLAND’S LOWER EASTERN SHORE. THIS IS BEVERLY OF SOMERSET IT’S ARCHITECTURE ITS GRANDEUR ITS BEAUTY DEMAND RESPECT AND GUESS WHAT. NOW FOR THE FIRST TIME IN DECADES YOU’RE GOING TO HAVE A CHANCE TO GO INSIDE HERE WITH US THIS AFTERNOON TO EXPLAIN WHY THIS IS SUCH A BIG DEAL? MAIN STREET PRINCESS AND MANAGER CARRIE SANDERSON AND BEVERLY’S HOME OWNER THIS IS DARRYL NEWHOUSE. LADIES THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR JOINING THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR HAVING US. SO FOR THE FIRST TIME IN FOUR DECADES TELL ABOUT BEVERLY SO THERE ARE SEVERAL DIFFERENT HOUSES 16 DIFFERENT HOMES AND PRIVATE BUILDINGS THAT ARE A PUBLIC BUILDINGS AS WELL THAT ARE ON THAT HISTORIC HOUSE TOUR THAT SOMERSET COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY PUTS TOGETHER. AND THIS YEAR WE’RE REALLY EXCITED TO HAVE BEVERLY FEATURED IT HASN’T BEEN ON THE HOUSE TOURISTS SINCE THE 70S. OMAR AND DARRYL LIVES THERE. I MEAN IT TOOK ELEVEN YEARS TO BUILD APPARENTLY THE OWNERS STARTED BUILDING IT IN 1780 FOR FIVE. THERE WAS AN OLDER HOUSE ON THE PROPERTY THAT’S NOW A WING A GUEST WING AND THEY USED LOCAL TREES APPARENTLY. THEY MADE THE BRICKS FROM CLAY IN THE NEIGHBORING CREEK RAIL AND OVER THE COURSE OF 11 YEARS THEY FINISHED. WHAT WAS KNOWN AS THE BIG HOUSE. WHAT DREW YOU TO THAT? APPARENTLY SOMERSET COUNTY WAS REALLY A CENTER OF COMMERCE AND THERE WERE A LOT OF LARGE PLANTS ASIANS AND BIG HOUSES THAT WERE HERE. AND IT WAS AN IMPORTANT AREA WHERE PEOPLE WERE FRIENDS WITH THOMAS JEFFERSON AND NAPOLEON BONAPARTE BROTHER JEROME WHO ACTUALLY MARRIED A LADY FROM BALTIMORE SO MARYLAND AND PLACES LIKE SOMERSET COUNTY WERE REALLY THE CENTER OF COMMERCE BECAUSE THE RIVERS WERE WHAT ALLOWED PEOPLE TO TRAVEL AND MOVE GOODS AND FOOD AND THINGS OF THAT NATURE. SO THOSE HOUSES SURVIVED AND MY PARTNER DR. DAVID MIDLAND HAD BEEN WORKING IN ANNAPOLIS BECAUSE HE LOVED THE ARCHITECTURE AND THE HOMES IN ANNAPOLIS. AND WHEN HE RETIRED HE NOTICED THIS HOME FOR SALE AND HE THOUGHT WELL LET’S JUST GO TAKE A LOOK AT IT AND SEE YOU KNOW IF IT IS AS GREAT AS WE’VE READ. AND SURE ENOUGH HE FELL IN LOVE WITH IT JUST LIKE YOU SAID THE GRANDEUR THE SIZE THE ELEGANCE IT REALLY IS A HOME THAT WAS BUILT FOR ENTERTAINING. SO THIS IS AN OPPORTUNITY TO HAVE IT ON THE TOUR AND ENTERTAIN AS MANY PEOPLE AS WE POSSIBLY CAN. NOW IN ORDER TO GET IT READY YOU HAD TO DO SOME RENOVATIONS. I’M SURE THE PAINTING WAS FINISHED JUST IN THE NICK OF TIME SOME OF THE TRIM TOOK ABOUT TWO SUMMERS TO PAINT BUT WE REALLY WANTED TO SHOWCASE THE TIME PERIOD OF THE HOME AND HAVE WILLIAMSBURG TYPE DECORATIONS WHICH ARE MADE FROM NATURAL MATERIALS. SO GOING OUT IN THE WOODS AND CUTTING HOLLY BRANCHES AND PINE BOUGHS AND THINGS OF THAT NATURE THAT THAT’S TAKEN A LITTLE BIT OF TIME AND OF COURSE WE’VE HAD TO SUPPLEMENT WITH SOME LOCALLY BOUGHT MATERIALS AS WELL IS THERE ANYTHING IN PARTICULAR ABOUT THE HOUSE THAT YOU LOVE THE MOST. WELL THE CEILINGS ARE ABOUT 30 OR 14 FEET SO THIS HAS REQUIRED A VERY LARGE TREE WHICH HAS REQUIRED A LOT OF HELP TO GET INTO THE HOUSE. SO KERRY AS WE SAID THE BEVERLY IS PART OF THE PRINCESS AN HISTORIC HOME TOUR. SO TELL US ABOUT THE STORE YEAH. SO THERE ARE AS I SAID 16 PUBLIC BUILDINGS AND PRIVATE HOMES THAT ON THE TOUR. SO THERE ARE CHURCHES THAT ARE OPEN TAEKO MANSIONS OF COURSE AND THEN SEVERAL PRIVATE HOMES INCLUDING BEVERLY SO A LOT OF THE LOCATIONS WITHIN WALKING DISTANCE AND THEN YOU NEED TO HOP IN YOUR CAR TO DRIVE OUT TO BEVERLY BUT IT WAS TOTALLY WORTH IT WORTH IT AND OTHER THINGS THAT WE LOOK FORWARD TO FRIDAY NIGHT.
