BARRY: TOURISTS ARE SPENDING MORE MONEY IN WESTERN MASSACHUSETTS. 22NEWS REPORTER SY BECKER FOUND OUT MGM SPRINGFIELD WAS GENERATING TOURISM DOLLARS LONG BEFORE THE CASINO COMPLEX OPENED LAST SUMMER… SY BECKER: THE MASSACHUSETTS OFFICE OF TRAVEL AND TOURISM REPORTS THAT SPRINGFIELD AREA TOURISM SPENDING INCREASED SIX AND A HALF PERCENT IN 2017. STATEWIDE TOURISM SPENDING WAS UP BY LESS THAN 5 PERCENT.. MGM SPRINGFIELD WAS NOWHERE NEAR BEING COMPLETED BACK THEN. BUT EVEN AT THAT STAGE OF CONSTRUCTION, THE CASINO WAS HAVING AN INFLUENCE ON THE AREA’S TOURISM.. MARY KAY: MGM HAS BEEN A DRAW EVEN BEFORE THE DOORS OPENED. THERE WAS A LOT OF CURIOSITY ABOUT IT.
