Tourism Management

Hi I’m Louise Hi I’m Lakmini and we are studying BA Honours in Tourism Management at York St John University The class is really interesting ideally
for students who have a strong interest in tourism This course is a mixture of lecture with theory and then seminars which put that theory in to practice and discussions in the class There are a lot of opportunities
for work placement and volunteering jobs So we do get the opportunity to go
out in to the wider world and put our theory into practice for mine I did it at Visit York’s main
tourism bureau It was great it’s got the mixture of different skills that I can put in to practice and I also managed to use my theory in some of the marketing departments as well The main reason I selected York St John University is because it is situated in York and because its a tourist city it’s much easier for me to get to know more about tourism York has over two thousand years of history so there is plenty of things to understand and to learn about the city For example at the moment we are sitting in museum gardens which is one of the main tourist attractions in York The support is great from teaching staff they are always on hand via email or
personal tutorials you can make with them They are always willing to help and they want
you to do your best Tourism itself is my favourite subject
and I like travelling and for example for last semester’s module we were supposed to travel to a place and write about it so it’s really interesting I think my favourite aspect has to
be the practical implication side of it the work placement was great that was definitely
the highlight of my course I’m still involved with that work placement and hopefully itwill provide job opportunities for the future The advice that I would give to students
who want to come and study is for international students like me I get a lot of opportunities around here so I recommend international students to come here and study in York St John My advice to anyone who’s thinking about studying the course is to actually attend a York St John open day get to know the tutors get to know what’s involved in the course look in to what you could actually do with a placement already that placement is always going to be a part of that course so if you have an idea already you can start looking around A voluntary job would be good It still looks good on your CV as well as long as it’s to do with tourism
