Wendi McLendon-Covey’s Summer Job

You worked at Knott’s Berry Farm,
did you work with animals before?>>I did. Well, because it’s a Berry Farm,
you think I’m gonna work with animals. No, I worked near the dinosaurs.>>Doing what?>>In a roaring 20s section of the park. They don’t go hand in hand,
but that’s what I did.>>No, the roaring 20s? That’s when the dinosaurs existed?>>That’s when the dinosaurs existed,
I guess.>>During the 20s they were flappers and
dinosaurs. [LAUGH]
>>Yeah. [LAUGH] What I did was I worked in roving
retail, which means anything you can walk around and sell, like balloons or
invisible dogs on leashes.>>[LAUGH]
>>Wow.>>So I wore a sailor suit in the hot sun. This is-
>>How old were you?>>I was 17, making $3.35 an hour
walking invisible dogs through the park. And there was offstage activity and
on-stage activity. So when you’re on stage, you’re
interacting with the guest, you’re being very polite, you’re not eating,
you’re not putting on your lip gloss, you’re not swearing or picking your nose,
things I do all the time.>>Yeah.>>[LAUGH]
>>But I would get terrible nosebleeds
in the heat, so me and my bloody nose would be walking around in
my sailor suit with my invisible dogs.>>[LAUGH]
>>I was a lot of fun, Ellen.>>Yeah.
